Joe Slafer Birth: Apr. 1,
1912 Duluth St. Louis County Minnesota, USA Death: Aug. 3,
2010 Los Angeles Los Angeles County California, USA Duluth News Tribune (MN) - August 7, 2010 Deceased Name: JOE SLAFER Joe Slafer, 98, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 3,
2010, in his home in Los Angeles. Born in Duluth April 1, 1912, to Morris and Sarah
(Freidlansky) Slafer, Joe was a 1930 graduate of Duluth Central High School,
an active Eagle Scout, and loved the Minnesota north woods. During World War II, he served with the Army Air Corps and
married Esther (Usan). Stricken with severe arthritis, in 1952 he and his
young family moved to warmer California. He recovered and was active and
energetic until his final days. Joe worked as an environmental test
technician in the young aerospace industry, making contributions to the
Mercury manned space program; but he was also a master upholsterer, which he
practiced into his late '90s. Joe proudly served the Jewish community as
Commander of the Jewish War Vets and President of the local chapter of B'nai
B'rith. Joe embodied the best qualities of "the greatest
generation" strength of character and an indomitable spirit. Inspiring
respect in all who knew him, he passed on to his family a "can do" attitude,
eternal curiosity, love of music and the simple things, respect for others,
and a sense or humor. Always with a twinkle in his eye, at 98, he proudly
displayed his valid California driver's license and the unique clocks he
made. But he was proudest of his family. Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife, Esther in
2008. Joe is survived by his children, Loren (Alexis), Dennis
(Andrea), Gene (Lorraine) and Anna; and grandchildren, Haley and Noah, who
will miss terribly his wit and joie de vivre. FUNERAL SERVICE: Noon Monday, Aug. 9, in Bell Brothers
Jarvi Dowd Chapel, 925 East Fourth St. burial at Adas Israel Cemetery. To
